One of the great things about writing for yourself is that you know exactly what you're capable of, you know how to make funny certain jokes or situations that may not read funny on the page.
The downside to that is: if you're reading the script and you don't know who these characters are or understand how the writers are playing their characters, it can make for a long, quiet read.
Alas, this one didn't do much for me.
What we have here is a 33 page 'First Draft Revised', written by James Bobin, Jermaine Clement and Bret McKenzie and dated 12/01/06 (download here). Being that this is a show for cable, there are no acts, act breaks or any of that fun stuff. There is a bit of a teaser off the top, but it's not labelled as such.
So, what happens in this episode? The singing duo play a World Music club, get a couple of new fans, blow off their first (and only) fan and then have an off-screen guy-guy-girl threesome with one of said new fans... which causes them to lose all of their (3) fans.
There's not a whole lot to say about this script that I didn't say off the top: Reading this script, it's pretty obvious that this show relies heavily on its lead actors -- doubly so since they're also the writers.
On a technical note, they do include the lyrics to the two songs that they're singing in the episode, but, again, without the music or the performance... it's just sort of there.
There is one sort of funny moment where the two friends decide that they're too freaked out to have a threesome that includes the both of them, so they try to bail out of the bathroom window... except the bathroom window leads them back into the front room of the apartment, where the female part of their would-be threesome is standing there waiting -- moreso, one of them gets stuck in said window... leading to one long, awkward silence.
Okay, it's not all that funny when I type it out like that, but when I read it I kind of chuckled.
To me, this is a show where reading the script will benefit those who're already fans, but for those of us firmly on the outside looking in... we probably won't get much out of it.
Maybe I'll check out some episodes on Netflix or something, if they have it. Who knows? Maybe I'll be converted.
Tomorrow I'll be checking out The Borgias 1x01 - Pilot. I quite liked The Tudors and I've heard good things about this follow-up... haven't seen the show itself yet, so this could be good.
